ON THE ORIGIN OF THE VAN ALLEN PROTONS.

Abstract

The experimental data on protons trapped in the Van Allen belt obtained with the Injun 5 satellite are compared with a model recently proposed. The experimental data show a minimum in the energy spectrum which is predicted by the theory under the assumption that the wave energy be proportional to the plasma density. Furthermore, the experimental data for 2<L<6 and for energies from 300 keV to 2 MeV can be described, as predicted, by a universal energy spectrum. The model also describes the experimental result of other authors that (E sub o) = approx. (L to the -3 power) at the equator, E sub o being the e-folding energy. (Author)
