EFFECT OF FORMING CONDITIONS OF THE WET WEB ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF KRAFT PAPERS.
Abstract
The importance of four forming variables in producing strong kraft papers from furnishes of northern pine and of southern pine was investigated. The variables included stock consistence, pH, temperature, and weight of sheet. With the northern pine, a flexible fiber, consistence and sheet weight were statistically shown to be the most important factors; greater strengths were generally obtained at low consistence. With the southern pine, a stiffer fiber, only sheet weight affected strength. Generally, the strength-to-weight ratio was higher for the heavier papers. No combination of the forming variables yielded machine-made papers with overall properties as high as those of the handsheets. (Author)
