THE OBJECTIVE PREDICTION OF AIR MASS THUNDERSTORMS.

Abstract

The method of objective prediction of air mass thunderstorms was developed by researching and testing available methods. Bailey's method was selected for a more detailed evaluation because of applicability to the problem and sustained superior dependability at other locations. Verification revealed two changes should be made before further use at Eglin AFB. The 850-millibar horizontal wind shear parameter unnecessarily required more information and the occurrence prediction was modified because of the unique air mass situation in this coastal region. This method, with these changes, was proven by the evaluation to reliably guide the operational forecaster in the prediction of air mass thunderstorms. (Author)
