ON THE ROLE OF ROOKS IN THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF CRIMEAN HEMORRHAGIC FEVER IN ASTRAKHAN OBLAST,

Abstract

In Astrakhan Oblast, birds associated with cattle pastures are of basic importance in feeding immature tick stages. Among them, rooks are of paramount importance owing to their great numbers and contact with pastures. A high number of cases of hemorrhagic fever infection was recorded in areas with the greatest rook numbers. Besides being hosts of immature tick stages, rooks have also another important role; they introduce ticks throughout the oblast. The ticks are very numerous in the delta and flood plain areas owing to the large number of rooks. The following nonspecific prophylactic measures are recommended against CHF: (a) to carry out ground acaricide treatment of the areas of highest rook concentrations (feeding, roosting, and day rest areas of rooks). (b) Wide scale introduction into the practice of destroying adult ticks on cattle by acaricide treatment. (Author)
