Explosion of Spherical Charges in Air: Travel Time, Velocity of Front, and Duration of Shock Waves (Detonation av Klotformiga Laddningar i Luft; Gangtid, Fronthastighet och Vaglangd hos den Ustsanda Stotvagen)

Abstract

Travel times of shock waves emitted from bare spherical charges of high explosives were measured. The experimental arrangements are described. Observed values may be reproduced by the formulae given. The scaling laws were verified over the whole range. The relation between the front velocity and the ambient density of the surrounding atmosphere was determined. The front velocities of shocks from PETN and from different mixtures of TNT and Al were determined. The resulting data do not verify the theories of Rudenberg and Sedov.
