INVESTIGATION OF INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING PORE PRESSURE IN CONCRETE. REPORT 2. INSTRUMENTS INSTALLED AT HARTWELL DAM, GEORGIA.

Abstract

In the summer of 1959, thirty-six pore pressure measuring instruments, twelve each of three types (piezometer tips, Carlson-Terzaghi cells, and U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) cells), were installed in Hartwell Dam, located on the Savannah River near Hartwell, Georgia. Periodically, readings have been taken on these instruments since their installation. The data collected are presented and discussed herein. Water leakage into the conduits that housed leads from the instruments obfuscated the data. However, pore pressures essentially equal to those exerted by the heads of water in the Hartwell Reservoir were recorded at locations 6 and 18 in. from the upstream face of the dam. It is recommended that the Savannah District, Corps of Engineers, add eighteen of the instruments to its Hartwell Dam structural behavior and periodic inspection program and that the WES portion of the work (ES 625.1) be terminated.
