PURIFICATION OF METHYLTRICHLOROSILANE,

Abstract

The principal concern of this report is the purification of methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) by direct rectification. The calculation of coefficients of relative volatility of impurities in MTCS by means of the Hildebrand theory of regular solutions made it possible to establish that serious difficulties can arise only when separating MTCS from the impurity PCl3. It was shown that it is advisable to carry out rectification of materials for the purpose of purification in two stages. Simple equations which permit determination of the rectification conditions necessary to achieve a given level of purity were obtained. The construction of a laboratory rectification column suitable for purifying substances of the MTCS type is described. Its outstanding feature is a head containing no moving parts or cocks. As a result of rectification, MTCS with a content of the majority of impurities of < n x 10 to the -6th% was obtained. (Author)
