ELECTRONIC TUNNELING INTO NIOBIUM SINGLE CRYSTALS.

Abstract

The central theme of all the research supported by this contract is a single experiment: tunneling of electrons into (and from) the surface of a superconducting single crystal of Nb or a similar transition metal. The experimental work on the energy gap for niobium was completed. The existence of a second energy gap was shown and its properties were investigated. Both gaps were shown to be correlated with the Fermi surface and band structure of niobium.
