INVESTIGATION OF PSEUDOBINARY SECTION W2B-WC OF TERNARY SYSTEM TUNGSTEN-BORON-CARBON,

Abstract

The interaction between the boride and carbide of tungsten over the pseudobinary section W(subscript 2)B-WC as well as certain properties of the pertinent alloys as a function of B and C content were investigated in specimens obtained by sintering the corresponding mixtures of W and B powders and hot pressing them in graphite compaction molds. Microstructural analysis of the obtained alloys showed that in all cases they have a two-phase microstructure consisting of crystals of the boride phase displaying a gray color following etching with a mixture of an alkali and potassium ferrocyanide and crystals of carbide phase displaying a white color.
