BORONIZING MOLYBDENUM FROM VAPOR PHASE,

Abstract

The vapor phase deposition of boron on molybdenum sheet specimens was studied over the temperature interval of 1200-1600K, with boron being deposited by thermal decomposition of BI3 in a specially constructed apparatus and with BI3 being synthesized in the same apparatus directly from the elements. The deposition of boron began at 1200K and gave the best results, i.e., dense and strongly adhering deposits of boron, at 1470-1600K. The microstructure and crystal structure of the deposited boron layer were investigated, and the surface boron layer was found to contain Mo2B5 as well as Mo2B. It was concluded that molybdenum may be borated by thermal decomposition of BI3.
