VISCO-ELASTIC LONGITUDINAL OSCILLATIONS OF A ROD WITH A MASS AT THE END (Vyazko-Uprugie Prodolne Kolebaniya Sterzhnya S Massoi na Kontse),

Abstract

The response of a non-linear single degree of freedom system to a sinusoidal input is analysed using visco-elastic relationships. The Poynting-Thompson relationship is used and non-linearity is introduced by reducing the relaxation component of the elastic modulus as a function of increasing deformation. An asymptotic solution is derived and its first approximation reduces to a simple form which is shown to give a reasonable representation of non-linear behaviour. A similar analysis with the Kelvin-Voight relationship is shown to be unrepresentative of reality. (Author)
