USE OF ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETER FOR ANALYSIS OF CEMENT.

Abstract

The possibility of analysis of cement by atomic absorption spectrophotometer was investigated. A sample was prepared by hydrochloric acid digestion followed by filtration. Matrix effect in the sample was diminished by calibrating the spectrophotometer with National Bureau of Standards (NBS) standard cement samples similarly prepared. Several NBS cements were treated as unknowns to establish the accuracy of the spectrophotometer method. An evaluation of the procedure in routine work was also conducted. The precision of the procedure for each component in cement was determined. The investigation indicated that the atomic absorption method provides rapid and reliable determinations for aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and manganese oxides in cement. The determinations of calcium and silicon oxides were less satisfactory. It is recommended that the procedures described in this investigation be used as optional procedures for acceptance testing of types I and III cements. (Author)
