THE COMBINED MEASURING OF BLOOD VOLUME AND TOTAL BODY WATER,

Abstract

A procedure has been developed for simultaneously measuring plasma volume (PV), red cell volume (RCV), and total body water (TBW). The total blood utilized is 10 ml., with a total body exposure dose of 27.52 mrad. The procedure was tested on eight normal male subjects, and the mean results were: RCV = 26.21 ml./kg., PV = 52.69 ml./kg., and TBW = 643.4 ml./kg. The mean RCV, PV, and TBV (total blood volume) were, respectively, 4%, 8%, and 12% of the TBW--from which the percentages for each subject varied only slightly. (Author)
