ULTRASONIC INVESTIGATION OF SUPERCONDUCTING PAIRS AND NUCLEAR SPIN WAVES IN SOLIDS.

Abstract

The results of research on the following investigations are reported: the study of the properties of superconducting electrons by means of ultrasonic techniques; the study of the interaction of nuclear spin waves; and the study of spin-phonon interaction in the rare earth metals. In the mixed state of pure superconductors it is found that the interacting electrons spatially average the order parameter. Measurements in both the normal and superconducting state of rhenium are reported. These data will yield values of the deformation potential in rhenium. The apparent difference in zero temperature energy gaps obtained in a pure superconductor, when low and high temperature data are used to predict the gaps, is resolved. Progress on the nuclear-spin-wave-phonon experiments is reported. A mechanism is theoretically proposed and experimentally verified for spin-phonon interaction in the spin-spiral phase of the rare earth metals. The investigation of the effect of an external magnetic field on this spin-phonon interaction is reported. (Author)
