SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF DICARBOXYLIC ACID ESTERS AS LOW HYGROSCOPIC BRAKE FLUID COMPONENTS.

Abstract

The object of this work was to synthesize and study a series of diesters of dicarboxylic acids as potential components of low hygroscopic brake fluids. For this purpose 37 esters (mostly diesters and previously unreported) were prepared by a modified Fischer esterification process. They were subjected to screening tests. Although no single compound was entirely satisfactory several exhibited properties which may be desirable in blending. Initial studies were made on blends of those esters which showed promise. This work will continue. Basic conclusions were drawn on the effects of different functional groups on rubber compatibility, water tolerance, and viscosity. (Author)
