THE NATURE AND MODE OF ACTION OF LOCAL ANTIBODY IN INTESTINE.

Abstract

Agglutinin titers in tissue extracts from mice or rabbits either immunized parentally or orally with Shigella or Vibrio cholerae var. El tor were measured and fractionated by molecular sieves and their characteristics were studied. Fraction I obtained by Sephadex G200 from tissue-extract of rabbits immunized orally with Shigella flexneri contained all of the agglutinins. Fraction I obtained by Sephadex G100 from tissue-extract of rabbits immunized with eltor fraction contained both homologous and heterologous agglutinins. The increase in beta-globulin in rabbits sera immunized orally with Shigella was observed, but no increase in gamma globulin was detected. The rise in tissue-agglutinin against heterologous serotype was observed in germ free mice when mice were challenged orally with Inaba or Ogawa serotype of El tor vibrio with or without pretreatment by fraction of vibrio.
