THE SENSITIVITY AND CONTROL OF DISTRIBUTED PARAMETER SYSTEMS,

Abstract

Three areas of investigation are considered. The first area is the sensitivity problem for distributed parameter systems. A review of the sensitivity problem is given and a new result is presented in the form of sufficient conditions to insure that the comparison sensitivity criterion is satisfied. This result allows the solution of a whole new class of previously unsolvable problems. Specifically, this class consists of those distributed parameter systems described by linear constant coefficient non-separable partial differential equations. The second problem involves the investigation of distributed parameter systems with separable controllers. This class of distributed parameter system has time-dependent control action which is constrained to known functions of the system's independent spatial variables. A study is presented in Chapter 4 of the error incurred through the application of ordinary differential equation optimization algorithms to the set of ordinary differential equations obtained by applying finite difference techniques to the partial differential equations describing the distributed parameter system.
