SEX DIFFERENCES IN THE SUBJECTIVE AND ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF ISOMETRIC MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS.

Abstract

Two groups of Ss (males and females) with extreme differences in maximum strength were asked to sustain a 50% of maximum subjective force on an isometric handle. During the endurance trials, they were asked to rate the levels of effort required to maintain the load. The active muscle was continuously monitored by surface EMG. The results demonstrated that with relative loading, Ss with extremes in maximum strength did not affect endurance. The EMG analysis suggested that this result was due to an underestimation by females in maximum endurance as well as maximum strength. It was concluded that although intersubject variability is reduced with the relative loading technique, extremes in maximum strength must be further controlled. (Author)
