MODIFICATION OF A HYDROGEN GENERATOR ML-539/TM TO PRODUCE PURE HYDROGEN.

Abstract

A hydrogen generator ML-539/TM (serial no. 13) which was originally designed to produce 400 scfh of dissociated ammonia (75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen), was modified to produce 400 to 450 scfh of pure (99%) hydrogen. The major changes in the generator were the adding of two palladium alloy diffusion chambers for purification of the dissociated ammonia, installing a flame safety device in order to monitor the firing of the oil burner into the combustion chamber and reworking the dissociator retort for operation at higher pressure. A rugged, electrically heated, ammonia cylinder box was designed and built to replace the previously used electric heating blanket. It successfully passed a low temperature test. Shock, vibration, and low temperature tests were successfully conducted on the modified generator. In addition to the above tests, the flame safety device successfully passed fungus, and high temperature tests. (Author)
