BANDWIDTH MINIMIZATION OF STIFFNESS MATRICES.

Abstract

A finite element analysis method can be developed for asymmetrically loaded axisymmetric solids by expanding the variables in the circumferential direction with a Fourier series approximation. It is shown that the resulting stiffness matrix can be banded, resulting in considerable savings in computer storage and time. Also, it is shown that, in order to achieve the minimum bandwidth, different approaches are required depending on whether the harmonics couple or uncouple. The two stiffness matrix formulations are described. (Author)
