RESULTS OF AIR BEARING SLIPPER TESTS ON THE HOLLOMAN ROCKET SLED TEST TRACK.

Abstract

An analysis and evaluation was made of the effectiveness of air bearing slippers. The slippers tested were not externally pressurized but rather were designed to compress high pressure ram air inside the slippers by means of a fore to aft converging slipper-rail gap geometry. Both standard and air bearing slippers were instrumented for pressure measurements and tested at speeds up to Mach 3.75 on 9-inch diameter monorail sleds. The test results consist of oscillatory load measurements as well as pressure measurements obtained from a twelve channel telemetry package. The following parameters were varied during the tests: type of slipper, slope of center portion of the upper inside slipper surface, height of the center portion of the upper slipper surface from the rail, and Mach number of the sleds. The results presented include possible explanations for the lack of correlation between the predicted and the measured pressures and suggestions to increase the usefulness of the air bearing slippers by reducing the high oscillatory loads.
