STABILITY ANALYSIS BY FINITE ELEMENTS.

Abstract

The application of finite elements to the analysis of structural stability problems is examined. A variational criterion for stability, namely the criterion that for stable equilibrium the second variation of the total energy must be positive definite, is used to develop a quadrilateral plate element, as well as an element for a prismatic member. The theory is presented in such a form that other elements can be derived therefrom with ease. (Author)
