THERMODYNAMICS OF ALLOYS. CALORIMETRIC STUDIES OF MANGANESE-COPPER AND PALLADIUM-ALUMINIUM ALLOYS.

Abstract

Tin solution calorimetry was employed in the measurement of heats of formation of the face-centered gamma-phase copper-manganese solid solutions at 320K. The results show that the alloys are characterized by moderately endothermic heats of formation of asymmetric form; the values rise to a maximum of approximately 1 Kcal/g.atom at about 80 atom% Mn. Combinations of the calorimetric heats with the published free energy data indicate the existence of positive excess entropies of formation. The thermodynamic characteristics are attributed to bonding and vibrational changes rather than magnetic effects. Using a technique based on the precipitation of an alloy from solution in liquid tin the heat of formation of PdAl (FeSi structure) has been determined. New measurements are reported for the isothermal heats of manganese, copper, aluminum and palladium at infinite dilution in liquid tin at 656K. (Author)
