THE EVALUATION OF VERTICAL EQUILIBRIUM IN THE SEA (Die Beurteilung des Vertikalen Gleichgewichts im Meere),

Abstract

The vertical equilibrium relationships in the sea are nearly always evaluated from the sigma tau values at the different depth levels for which temperature and salinity measurements exist. As in the case of density differences, the effect of pressure is unessential and, therefore, is neglected. In some typical cases dealing with the general water circulation in isolated basins, the adiabatic temperature changes, which are caused by pressure, are taken into consideration. The report discusses in detail the effect of pressure on the density of sea water and on the vertical equilibrium. (Author)
