ACCUMULATION OF HEAVY MINERALS IN RECENT COASTAL DEPOSITS (Nakoplenie Tyazhelykh Mineralov v Sovremennykh Pribrezhno-Morskikh Otlozheniyakh),

Abstract

The eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, along the Lithuanian and Latvian boundaries, is described. Sediment character and shoreline changes are discussed, pointing out the recent geologic history of the Baltic Sea, particularly during the Ioldian and Litorina transgressions. The special features of the predominantly sandy coast in the Kolkasrags sector and the mixed pebble beaches in the Gulf of Riga are analyzed and discussed. It is seen that the nature of sedimentation now is approximately the same as in the Litorina age from 5500 to 2000 years ago. (Author)
