STUDY OF THE KINETICS OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CN BOND IN POLYACRYLONITRILE FROM INFRARED ABSORPTION SPECTRA (Izuchenie Kinetiki Prevrashcheniya CN Svyazi v Polyakrilonitrile po Ik-Spektram Pogloshcheniya),

Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile films were heated in vacuum at temperatures in the range 205-270C and the rate of disappearance of the nitrile group with time followed by IR spectroscopy. The reaction was the conversion of the nitrile group into a conjugated -C=N- structure. In the range 205-235C, transformation with no degradation occurred with an activation energy of 41 K cal/mole. At 245-270C some degradation occurred and the activation energy for nitrile conversion fell to 21 K cal/mole.
