ANALYSIS OF SURGE FORCES ON A MOORED SHIP IN PROGRESSIVE WAVES.

Abstract

The object of the study was to derive an approximate equation for the surge motion of a moored ship in a train of progressive waves and to specify the field measurements needed to verify the equation and to analyze an example of field data using the equation. Application of the equation for surge to field data obtained from a moored drilling tender in the Gulf of Mexico gave unsatisfactory results. It is indicated that the damping force due to friction is negligibly small and insofar as surge is concerned, the mooring chains play a minor role. (Author)
