TABLES FOR DEVELOPING NONPARAMETRIC ESTIMATES OF NEAR-MINIMUM PROPERTY VALUES.
Abstract
In the development of design stresses for wood, an estimate of a near-minimum value of a mechanical property for clear wood is required. To determine this value from sample observations a method is needed that can be applied with statistical confidence to all species, and that is not encumbered by untested assumptions. The measured value of one of the lower ordered observations in a random sample is a one-sided tolerance limit for the population from which the sample was drawn. Tables of confidence coefficients are given for various tolerance limits and sample sizes. They cover the first five order statistics for samples of size 6 to 100 and tolerance limits of 80 to 99 percent. An example is given showing use of the tables for data analysis. (Author)
