SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE INTERACTION OF GRAPHITIZED CARBON MATERIALS WITH GASES IN THE 700-2500 deg C TEMPERATURE REGION

Abstract

New experimental data were presented on the reaction rate of porous graphites and pyrographite with CO2, N2O vapors, and O2, N2 mixture at a temperature up to 2500 degrees centigrade. The purpose of the experiments was to make clear the mechanism of high temperature oxidation of pure carbon materials which are widely used in various branches of new technology. The experimental setup and procedure are described. The spherical or rectangular samples were heated in an argon stream up to a given temperature, then in a stream of unheated oxidizing gas to determine the average oxidation rate constant. The oxidation rate in the experiments with preheated gas was not significantly different from that determined without preheating. The data indicated that oxidation of the porous graphite was diffusion controlled to a considerable extent and that the oxidation of pyrographite was mainly kinetics controlled over the temperature range studied.
