MODIFICATION OF POLYACRYLONITRILE FIBER BY GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION,

Abstract

The acrylonitrile 4-(beta-vinylsulfonyl)-2-aminoanisole copolymer (I) (PANV) fiber was modified by graft copolymn. with Me acrylate (II), Bu acrylate (III), or acrylic acid (IV) in the presence of a redox system composed of HVO3 plus H2SO4. The graft copolymerization kinetics was markedly affected by fiber orientation. Smaller degree of drawing and higher reaction temp. brought about increased polymn. rate. The grafted copolymers-exhibited higher loop strength, wear resistance, and in the case of I-IV graft copolymer, also increased flexural strength.
