GAS LASER RESEARCH IN THE INFRARED AND VISIBLE RANGE.
Abstract
The report covers laser and quantum electronics research in the areas of precision length and frequency measurements using laser harmonic frequency mixing, laser-induced line narrowing effects and their applications, self-induced transparency and related phenomena, and molecular relaxation measurements. Work in the area of laser harmonic frequency mixing includes observation of beat notes between adjacent 10.6 micron CO2 laser transitions at 54GHz, absolute frequency measurements of the 84 micron D2O laser transition, infrared mixing of the 28 micron water vapor laser with the 9.3 micron CO2 laser, and high-accuracy length measurements of far infrared laser transitions. In the area of laser-induced line narrowing, a detailed theory has been developed which describes effects such as mode crossing and spontaneous emission line narrowing. As an example of the application of this theory, the level crossing effect in stimulated emission has been used to obtain a precise determination of hyperfine structure in an excited electronic state of Xe129. In the area of molecular relaxation measurements a detailed study of the decay mode of excited CO2 through pure CO2 has been completed. The diffusion constant, collision cross sections and wall de-excitation probabilities have been obtained. (Author)
