RADIATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CLASSES OF LOCAL WEATHER IN THE ARCTIC,

Abstract

The radiant energy of the sun is of very great importance in shaping local weather. Therefore in the description of climate in terms of classes of weather it is necessary to take into account not only radiation data for considerable intervals of time (for the month or year) but also the day-to-day characterization. For purposes of this study we divided the Arctic Basin (North Polar Sea) into two regions, the first region taking in the polar area down to the 85th parallel, and the second region the eastern part of the Central Arctic Basin adjacent to the Pacific Ocean sector of the Arctic, between 85N and 75N. From the available observations for each class of weather we calculated the mean monthly values of the total and scattered radiations, and determined generalized characteristic values for the three-month period May to July, since within this period the radiation characteristics do not change very much from month to month.
