PHYSICAL PROBLEMS OF SPACE THRUST POWER ENGINEERING,

Abstract

The book has a survey character and is dedicated to an urgent subject - power safeguard of promising thrust systems of spacecraft. This is one of the first attempts to give a full account of contemporary views on the possibility of use in thrust systems of external mass-energy resources. Much attention is paid to new principles of creation of space thrust systems, in particular, to the use of the surrounding medium and interaction of spacecraft with external electrical and magnetic fields. For the first time extensive data on power and mass resources of circumsterrestrial space are collected and systematized. A brief familiarization with atomic sources of energy sufficiently compact and energy consuming shows the reality of safeguard of the energy of these systems. The book introduces the reader to a complex new region, but its material is based on well-known physical phenomena and processes and, therefore, is accessible to a wide circle of persons with the usual college student preparation.
