ENZYME STUDIES ON PRIMATES: EVOLUTIONARY TRENDS AND PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE (A SUMMARY OF FINDINGS).
Abstract
Several enzymes and their isozymes were compared among primates, and some conclusions were drawn regarding evolutionary advancement. The enzymes examined included lactate dehydrogenase, aconitase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. In-depth studies were conducted on lactate dehydrogenase. Results indicated that there is some difference in muscle-type lactate dehydrogenase between the chimpanzee and man which is not revealed by electrophoretic migration; that the ratio of heart/muscle type lactate dehydrogenase increases with ascension of the evolutionary scale; and that there may be two loci coding for the heart-type subunit in the slow loris.
