LABORATORY STUDIES OF ATOMIC COLLISION PROCESSES IN ATMOSPHERIC GASES.

Abstract

A combination drift tube and quadrupole mass spectrometer has been modified so as to make possible measurements of the rate coefficients for the hydration of atmospheric negative ions at low partial pressures of water vapor in oxygen. The partial pressure of the water is determined from measurements of the rate of production of positive ions produced by electron ionization of the gas effusing from the orifice between the drift tube and the mass spectrometer. Preliminary results obtained during this contract include calibration of the ionizer and measurement for the rate constant for the reaction O2(-) + 2O2 yields O4(-) + O2 and its inverse. (Author)
