DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NATIONAL PLAN FOR NAVIGATION.

Abstract

A plan for the operation, development and implementation of existing and possible future navigation systems for civil aviation and maritime requirements is presented. Areas of air and marine commonality are discussed with the objective of minimizing the number of radionavigation aids. Specific Federal Aviation Administration and Coast Guard programs for research and development of navigation systems, and an operating plan into the 1980' are described. Special emphasis is placed on long distance air navigation and high seas marine navigation. Typical of navigation systems considered are Inertial, Loran, Omega and Satellite. New statements of policy in regard to long distance navigation aids are proposed to replace the current U.S. policy adopted by the Air Coordinating Committee on 23 December 1958. (Author)
