VARIABLE FRICTION KNEE UNIT FOR SWING PHASE CONTROL IN ARTIFICIAL LEGS.

Abstract

A final report is given on the origination, development, testing and use of a mechanical knee braking device having application to most above-knee constructions. The unit applies braking forces to the swing of the artificial leg during walking which are intended to simulate the actions and efficiencies of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles of the thigh. Two braking modes are applied. One operates throughout the entire swing phase. The second, superimposed over the first, is applied to either end of the swing phase of the walking cycle. Both types are separately adjustable to add a measure of economy and natural-like motion to the swing of the artificial leg. (Author)
