MEMORY STRUCTURES FOR INTERACTIVE COMPUTERS,

Abstract

An interactive computer is a computer which responds immediately to any solicitation of the user. The response time is defined as the time between the question by the user and the answer by the computer, assuming that the computation involved for this response is negligible compared to the time scale of the user. The problem for the system can then be stated as follows: given a hardware configuration which is capable of serving a certain number of interactive consoles if all the parts of the system are kept busy, how should the processor time, the memories, and the input/output devices be assigned so that each user is served with the smallest possible response time.
