AN INTERACTIVE INFORMATION ORGANIZATION AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM IN A TIME-SHARING ENVIRONMENT,

Abstract

The study of the formatted file organization and retrieval systems, in particular, the scatter indexing methods, were the major part of the formatted systems which are investigated. The upper bound of such an index file using single and multiple attribute queries is studied and obtained. In the general file systems, the study begins with the investigation of some of the existing systems, leads to some possible improvement observations, and finally results in the projection-angle (PRANG) clustering technique. This method of clustering partitions the process into two individual processes and associates records according to joint similarity and simultaneously makes it easier to locate the proper cluster in the retrieval phase. An operating system for this method using the TSS 940 time-sharing computer system at the Berkeley campus is implemented and the results of such a system for two data bases are studied. The Prang system is able to produce clusters for such data bases and thus organize proper information retrieval systems. The retrieval of the system results in orderly related records of the file with an associating factor for the retrieved records. (Author)
