AN IMPROVED NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE FOR RIFLING CURVE DESIGN.

Abstract

This report contains a mathematical analysis and corresponding numerical implementation of an improved technique for rifling curve design in cannon and small arms. In this analysis, the quantity of main interest is the normal force exerted on the lands of the gun tube by the rotating band of the projectile. The objective of the analysis is to obtain the rifling curve for the gun tube, given the relative ordinates of the desired normal force on the lands as a function of distance along the gun tube; this latter function will be referred to as the normal force shape curve.
