STUDY OF NUCLEAR SEEDED MHD PLASMAS.

Abstract

Mathematical models, formulated to describe the ion current and anode voltage characteristics of pulsed ionization chambers used in kinetic studies of Nuclear Generated MHD Plasmas, were experimentally verified. Equations, resulting from the theory, and relating the voltage signal pulse profiles to initial plasma densities, were used to determine plasma production and loss coefficients for a range of 3He gas pressures from 1-10 atmospheres. The results, which are presented, were found to be in good agreement with existing kinetic theories. The results of a numerical parametric study of ionization column dynamics in high pressure gases, including diffusion, recombination, inter-column mixing and their temperature and pressure dependence, are presented in graphical and tabular form for a wide range of temperatures and pressures.
