ANALYSIS OF CONTACT PROBLEMS BY MEANS OF AN OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUE.

Abstract

In this report an approximate but general method of solving certain contact problems is developed by utilizing an optimization technique. It is shown that the problems of unbonded contact between two elastic bodies may be posed as optimization problems in the following sense: 'Determine the contact stress distribution which minimizes the difference between two boundary deflections by the contacting bodies, subject to some constraint conditions.' Furthermore, this optimization problem can be reduced through discretization to a linear programming problem. (Author)
