DEVELOPMENT OF A GRADIOMETER FOR MEASURING GRAVITY GRADIENTS UNDER DYNAMIC CONDITIONS,

Abstract

Design and development of a breadboard model of a gravity gradiometer has been undertaken by Hughes Aircraft Company under this Air Force Contract. This breadboard model, when developed, will be capable of measuring the gradient of the gravitational force field with any axis orientation under a quiet laboratory environment. The over-all goal of this program and succeeding ones is to develop a gradiometer capable of measuring gravitational force field gradients while being flown in an airplane. The report contains an up-to-date description of the design and development of the gradiometer and the design changes required as a result of preliminary tests. It also outlines a development plan which will resolve pertinent problems and assist in the achievement of the prototype operational goals. (Author)
