STUDY CONCERNING THE ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM IN A SHIP TRACKING CONTEXT.

Abstract

The following statistical criteria - maximizing the joint probability, minimizing the joint probability, maximizing the expected number, maximizing the average odds - are evaluated for their ability to serve as a basis for determining the optimal assignment of reports to ship tracks from the data in a likelihood matrix and compared to the non-statistical matrix-scan method. The recommendation is made to use the non-statistical matrix-scan method over the various statistical criteria as it yields comparable results and is computationally convenient. (Author)
