ENVIRONMENTAL OCEANOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS IN SUPPORT OF PARKA II-A OPERATIONS.
Abstract
The USS MARYSVILLE (PCER 857) with scientific party from the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics obtained oceanographic environmental data consisting of temperature and sound velocity profiles and bathymetry north of the Hawaiian Islands in support of PARKA II-A operations from 15 November to 5 December 1969. The temperature profiles showed that no sharp thermal fronts were encountered during this period which confirms the variability of the near-surface ocean environment in the area. Data are presented showing the variation in temperature at a fixed depth in the thermocline over a period of nine hours, during which a 2.78 degrees change in temperature occurs in 2 hours 26.5 minutes as a result of the passage of internal waves.
