STUDY OF A TRANSPIRATION-COOLED, CONSTRICTED ARC.
Abstract
The report covers theoretical and experimental studies of a constricted, transpiration-cooled arc using argon or nitrogen at atmospheric pressure as coolant. Most of the experiments are conducted with argon as coolant in a current range from 40 to 200 Amps. Arc performance characteristics are shown obtained from solutions of the conservation equations with a number of simplifying assumptions. The sensitivity of these characteristics on uncertainties of thermodynamic and transport properties is demonstrated and, for cooling with nitrogen, the influence of various boundary conditions on the arc characteristics is also shown.
