DESIGN AND BEHAVIOR OF TSS/8: A PDP-8 BASED TIME-SHARING SYSTEM.
Abstract
The thesis is an existence proof of a small scale time-sharing system implemented on a PDP-8 computer. It includes hardware design, system software design, and performance analysis, to which special attention is given. A description of the complete system is given together with the reasoning behind the major decisions. The performance analysis was done in parallel with the design and implementation of the system. Methods were developed to measure the runtime of individual editor and focal commands on a standard PDP-8 computer as well as the response time of the time-sharing system. Several analytical models were used to predict the performance of the system and an accurate simulation model was designed. A comparison of the measured performance results with the predicted results of the simulation and analytical models shows their accuracies. The simulation model was used to study the influence of certain system parameters (e.g., swaptime and scheduling algorithm) on the system performance; this led to the system configuration of the Carnegie-Mellon University system.
