SINGLE STATION PREDICTION OF CEILING AND VISIBILITY.

Abstract

Equations were derived and tested for predicting ceiling and visibility at four terminals based upon weather observations at the local terminal alone. These equations were compared with similar equations based on data from a network of weather stations within approximately 200 miles of the terminal. The REEP screening technique was used to derive the equations, and forecasts on independent data were verified by means of the Brier score. It was found that the single station equations were only slightly less accurate than the equations based on networks. A test was made, also, of the effectiveness of stratifying the data by season and time of day prior to deriving the equations. No advantage was found in such stratification after considering the increased cost of deriving equations in that way. (Author)
