STUDIES OF EXCITED HYDROGEN IN RELATION TO ADVANCED PROPULSION.

Abstract

A low pressure stream of hydrogen containing several percent of the molecules in excited vibrational states was produced by allowing discharge-produced H-atoms to combine on a bare Pyrex surface. Atoms were detected by titration with NO and by means of a catalytic calorimetric probe. Excited hydrogen was monitored by observing infrared emission from HCN which is excited by collisions with the excited hydrogen molecules. Surface de-activation and reactions of excited hydrogen with other molecules are being studied. (Author)
