THE MEASUREMENT OF BLOOD VESSELS IN RETINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF SUBMARINERS
Abstract
The literature describing the relationship between retinal blood vessels and general vascular disease is reviewed. Data on the differences in caliber of arteries and veins (A/V ratios) among normal and hypertensive subjects is summarized. The specific problems that arise in attempting to evaluate A/V ratios in different individuals are discussed and a standardized technique for measuring retinal photographs is described which overcomes various difficulties common to A/V measurements. Sample data using the technique are given.
